Professional development programs for nurses at Duke University Health System include our:
SWANK Healthcare LMS
Certification Program
All Duke Medicine nurses who work within an acute care hospital facility are eligible to participate in this program.
- To qualify, certification must NOT be required for a candidate's current position
- Upon completion of the program, successful participants will earn a one-time bonus of $1,000
Charge Nurse Program
The Charge Nurse functions as a permanent shift charge nurse for a unit or ward, and provides direct care to patients with physical and/or mental disorders. Interested candidates must first complete the Charge Nurse Program, and undergo a validation of required skills.
- Nurses are eligible to participate after 12-18 months service within the Duke Medicine system
- Compensation = $2.00/hour additional

Preceptor Program
The Preceptor Program at Duke Medicine prepares participants to serve in an array of vital roles, including coach, teacher, facilitator, resource person and evaluator. Interested candidates must first complete the Preceptor Program, and undergo a validation of required skills.
Prior to participation in the Clinical Rotation portion of the program, candidates will meet with learners to discuss the clinical experience and identify strategies for achieving learning objectives.
- Nurses are eligible to participate after 12 months service within the Duke Medicine system
- Compensation = $1.00/hour additional

wank Healthcare LMS
DUHS Clinical Education & Professional Development partnered with Swank Healthcare in 2008 to provide exceptional continuing educational opportunities for patient care service employees in Duke Medicine. Swank offers external offerings through Health.edu as well as the ability to publish educational offerings for DUHS employees. The Health.edu courses offer accredited courses for administration, clinical labs, dietetics, EMS, medical records, nursing, nursing assistant, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy and social work.
