Durham Regional Hospital GEMS program
(Graduates: Engaged, Mastering,
Succeeding)
Durham Regional Hospital is proud to offer a unique, one of a kind new graduate program, which provides the new nurse the opportunity to try out several units before choosing a home base.
The GEMS program (Graduates: Engaged, Mastering,
Succeeding) is an information- packed, precepted, paid
internship which allows the new nurse to work for several
weeks on different units within a specific track: Each
GEMS intern selects an area of interest (Critical Care,
Adult – Health, or Women’s Services) and is
then assigned several weeks in each area. At the
end of the program the new GEMS nurse knows what the units
feels like and the types of patients cared for, who the
staff are on sister units, and has a bigger perspective
of the hospital as a whole.
