Duke Has Great Benefits

Internships & Programs

Oncology

Oncology nursing has become one of the most progressive specialties in the nursing profession. It challenges medical know-how and technical expertise. But it also challenges your heart, your soul, your emotions. Caring for cancer patients combines skill, courage and talent. That’s the combination so many men and women imagine when they decide to become nurse.

Available to new graduate nurses, the Oncology Nursing Internship is a 2-year commitment to learning multiple aspects in adult cancer care for: Hematology; Solid Tumors; and Bone Marrow Transplant. During your internship, you’ll receive not just a brief orientation, but year ‘round continuing education. You’ll grow as you learn and as you’re challenged. And you won’t be alone. You will have a unit preceptor and an advanced practice nurses to guide, lead and share personal insights and knowledge with you.

You’ll be involved in scheduled lectures, seminars, and clinical rounds that enhance your understanding of the entire continuum of care, both inpatient and outpatient. And you’ll share in the highly professional attitudes and respect that flow between nurses and physicians in this unique field. In short, you’ll be an active member of an interdisciplinary health care team - professionals serving a major research center, the Southeast’s leading provider of cancer care.

An individualized learning contract outlines expectations for each of the 3 parts of
the internship that includes clinical skills, critical thinking and effective communication
for the new RN. For full details, please download the Oncology Nursing
