Closed to Applications for Spring
2006
The ‘State of the Art’ Operating Rooms of Duke University
Hospital and its world renown operating room team provides surgical
services for both inpatient and outpatient surgery. The Duke Hospital
OR consists of thirty rooms at the main campus in the Duke North
Operating Rooms, four at the Duke Eye Center, and eight at the Ambulatory
Surgery Center. Our nurses care for patients from all walks of life
and parts of the world, utilizing some of the most advanced surgical
techniques, equipment, and materials available.
Our internship program is available to RN’s with or without
nursing experience, and from various educational backgrounds. Past
interns have included those with 20 years of inpatient nursing experience,
while others have been new graduates. Our unique Operating Room
Internship incorporates skills and techniques that are not traditionally
included in nursing school programs. In order to have a better understanding
of the role of an OR nurse, we encourage anyone who is considering
our Internship to observe one of our OR teams at work.
Our OR Internship is held based on unit need, usually each spring
and fall. The first four weeks consists of both classroom and practical
hands-on experience. Content is based on AORN Standards as well
as Duke Hospital OR Policies and Procedures. Your development into
a skilled OR team member continues for an additional 6 month period
while being paired with an experienced OR preceptor.
In exchange for this enhanced educational experience, we require
each program participant to commit to two years of employment within
our operating rooms. Interested candidates will be scheduled for
an interview and an observation experience in our operating rooms.
Applicants will be notified of program start dates.
