General Description of the Job Class

 

The Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) Liaison utilizes coding and clinical expertise to identify opportunities and ensure accuracy and completeness of clinical documentation used for measuring and reporting physician outcomes as well as for billing purposes. Serves as a Duke University Health System (DUHS) ICD-10-CM coding/Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) expert, supporting clinical documentation initiatives across the System. Represents Clinical Documentation Integrity within the DUHS Clinical Documentation Integrity/HIM Coding departments.

 

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

 

  • Works with the Director of CDI to create, implement, and monitor departmental policies and procedures that support the organizational goals, business objectives and clinical documentation accuracy and data quality across the Duke University Health System.
  • Serves as liaison between Department of Clinical Documentation Integrity and HIM Compliance Specialists across the health system.
  • Matrices education and communication management between CDI program and HIM across the System.
  • Serves as the ICD-10-CM expert resource to CDI staff and interacts with the HIM Coding Unit Liaison to ensure appropriate understanding of documentation needed to support the coding function.
  • Routinely answers questions and provides education to CDI staff on compliant documentation to support ICD-10-CM codes assigned by HIM.
  • Evaluates variances in DRGs assigned by the CDI staff and collaborates with HIM leadership across the System to support the educational needs of the CDI staff and Coders to ensure compliance with coding guidelines and identify opportunities for education.
  • Collaborates with CDI and HIM leadership to develop reports which monitor program success and opportunities for continued focus.
  • Establishes effective working relationships with the CDI and coding staff to facilitate ease of communication and team building.
  • Develops recommendations as required for documentation templates and physician queries based on coding changes, regulatory modifications and quality review findings.
  • Monitors DUHS HIM coding program from a CDI perspective.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

 

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education:

Bachelor degree required, preferably in a healthcare related field.

Masters degree preferred.

 


Experience:

Seven years of experience in an acute care coding environment or consulting practice assigning and/or assessing ICD-10 codes and MS DRGs. Coding auditing experience required.

Previous experience in an existing Clinical Documentation Integrity Program preferred.

 


Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or AHIMA ICD-10-CM Trainer strongly preferred.

 


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Expert in ICD-10-CM & CPT-4 coding conventions

Extensive DRG/APC/CCI knowledge

Effective written and verbal communication skills

Knowledge of ICD-10 required

Powerpoint, Excel, 3M software, CDIS software preferred

Statistical Reporting

Presentation, training and communication skills essential

Works independently with minimal supervision
