Where can I find more information on the types of nursing units with Duke Medicine?

I have applied for a specific position several times, but have not been selected to interview. Why is that?

You may not meet the qualifications for the position and/or the manager's preferences. Please review the job description carefully, as preferences may be indicated.

I already applied on-line, how do I get an update on my application?

To check the status of jobs you have applied to, log back into the system and Click "Job submission status".

How can I contact a Nurse Recruiter?

Nurse Recruiters are available on "Live Chat" Tuesdays, from 1:00pm - 3:00pm EST and Thursdays from 10:00am - 12:00pm (except on holidays). To access "live chat", visit dukenursing.org, then select "Click to Chat".

When can I schedule an interview and can I shadow on the unit?

We continuously review submitted resumes and contact selected candidates for interviews. A shadow experience may or may not be scheduled as part of the interview process. Unfortunately, we are not able to interview every candidate who applies.

When will new graduate positions post to the website?

Most Clinical Nurse I positions are posted during the months of October and November for December graduates, and between March and April for May graduates. The number of positions varies, and is dependent on the number of current RN vacancies. Continue to monitor the website for available Clinical Nurse I positions.

I am a new graduate. Can I apply to Clinical Nurse II positions?

No, Clinical Nurse II positions require 12 months of nursing experience.

Does Duke employ non-U.S. citizens?

Yes, we employee nurses form overseas, providing they meet our employment requirements and Federal regulations concerning working in the U.S. You can find additional information on our website.

Does Duke offer any relocation assistance?

Yes*. There are two options available to new employees hired into full-time nursing positions (30-40 hours/week).

Option 1: A taxable relocation allowance that you would receive 6-8 weeks after you start your new position. It is included as supplemental pay in your regular paycheck ($3,000 allowance for out-of-state hires if you relocate to NC; or $1,000 allowance for in-state hires if you move at least 75 miles).

Option 2: Use one of our two moving companies to move you (the same amounts as above).

*Complete relocation guidelines can be obtained from the Nurse Recruitment office, and are subject to change.

What new graduate programs are available through Duke Medicine?

Duke offers a range of new graduate programs, including:

What is Graduate: Engaged, Mastering, Succeeding or GEMS?

Our GEMS program is an informative, hands-on internship program for the new nurse that is paid and preceptor guided. New graduate will rotate between multiple units for a total of 8-12 weeks, then move to the "home" unit at the end of that period for more specific unit orientation.

What is Specialty Nurse Internship Program or SNIP?

Geared toward new graduates, Specialty Nurse Internship Program (SNIP) offers:

  • A structured, 26-week orientation for newly-graduated RNs
  • Extensive experience in a specialty orientation setting
  • Designated Program Coordinator for additional residency and mentoring support
  • Structured orientation, classroom time and networking components to support clinical experience

Does Duke offer an OR training program for new graduates?

A "New to the OR" training program is available for new graduate nurses. The program includes a 6-month orientation with classroom instruction and training working side by side with a preceptor in the OR. New graduate nurses must apply on-line at www.dukenursing.org to be considered for the program. The posting will walk you through the next steps and process to be considered to attend the open house. Once all applications are screened, selected applicants are invited to attend an open house. At the open house applicants have the opportunity to interview and shadow in the ORs. The program is offered one or two times a year, based on need. When open house dates are determined, the position will be posted on-line as "New to the OR training program for a Clinical Nurse I".

Does Duke offer an OR training program for experienced nurses without any OR experience?

We do offer a New to the OR training program for experienced nurses without OR experience. It is a 6-month orientation that includes classroom instruction and training working side by side with a preceptor in the OR. All applications must be submitted on-line at www.dukenursing.org to be considered for the program. The posting will walk you through the next steps and process to be considered to attend the open house. Once all applications are screened, selected applicants are invited to attend an open house. At the open house applicants have the opportunity to interview and shadow in the ORs. The program is offered one or two times a year, based on need. When the open house dates are determined, the positions will be posted on-line as "New to the OR training program for a Clinical Nurse II".

Additionally, Durham Regional Hospital offers a specialized training program geared toward new nurse graduates (Level - Clinical Nurse I): Transition to Practice Program (formerly GEMS).

Designed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, TTP is an enhanced model of orientation for new graduates which includes education for the new grad, and features dedicated preceptors, topics such as conflict resolution, communication, and quality assurance, and program coordinators to provide support and mentoring to new grads.
